Cold & Flu Season: A Holistic Guide to Keeping Your Family Well
The temperatures drop, the days get shorter, and suddenly it feels like everyone is sick. Welcome to cold and flu season! 🦠
But here's the thing: respiratory viruses circulate year-round. When the seasons change, we tend to spend more time indoors, breathe drier air, get less sunlight, move less, and reach for more sugary comfort foods. Along with increased exposure to other people, these seasonal shifts can affect our overall health and resilience.
The goal isn't to keep your kids in a bubble all winter (although tempting 😂). It's to build healthy foundations, know what to reach for when someone gets sick, and feel confident navigating it all.
Start With the Basics
Before you stock your supplement cabinet, let's talk about the everyday habits that support your family's health.
Prioritize sleep: Growing bodies need plenty of rest. Protect bedtime routines, allow extra sleep when needed, and don't push through illness just to keep up with the schedule.
Feed them whole foods: Think protein, healthy fats, colorful fruits and veggies, and mineral-rich foods. Eggs, beef, berries, citrus, sweet potatoes, avocado, bone broth, and fermented foods are great staples.
Get outside: Fresh air, daylight, and movement matter, even when it's chilly. Bundle up and get outside when you can.
Support the gut: Include fiber-rich foods and fermented options like yogurt or kefir if tolerated. A healthy gut is an important part of overall immune function.
Pay attention to indoor air: Open windows when practical, consider a HEPA air purifier, and keep indoor humidity comfortable. Clean humidifiers regularly and skip unnecessary fragrances and harsh cleaning products.
Stay hydrated: Water, broth, and warm drinks all winter long!

For Kids
Xlear Nasal Spray: A xylitol-based saline nasal spray that helps moisturize nasal passages and flush out mucus, allergens, and irritants. It can be a helpful part of your child's nasal hygiene routine during cold and flu season, especially after time spent in crowded settings.
Elderberry Syrup (code: DRM): Elderberry is a popular seasonal remedy, but evidence is limited. Choose a reputable, properly prepared product, and never use raw or unripe elderberries.
Probiotics: Regular probiotic use helps balance gut flora and strengthen immunity.
Vitamin D: With less sunlight during the colder months, it's worth reviewing your child's vitamin D intake with their healthcare provider. The right amount depends on age, diet, and individual needs.
Vitamin C: Prioritize food sources like berries, kiwi, citrus, and bell peppers. Supplements may be useful in some situations, but megadosing isn't necessary.
Zinc: Zinc plays a role in immune function, and some evidence suggests certain zinc products may help shorten a cold when started early. Age, formulation, and dosing matter.

What to Do at the First Sign of Illness
That first sniffle, scratchy throat, or sudden crash in energy? Here's your cue to slow things down.
Hydrate, rest, and simplify. Cancel what can wait, offer nourishing foods and fluids, and prioritize sleep.
Support their symptoms. Saline drops or spray and gentle suction can help little ones with congestion. A clean humidifier may also help. For children over one year old, honey can soothe a cough. Never give honey to babies under 12 months.
Consider your options. Depending on your child's age, symptoms, and health history, your healthcare provider may recommend specific supplements or other supportive care.
What About Homeopathy for Acute Illness?
Homeopathy is one of my favorite tools to teach parents about when illness strikes. It's inexpensive to keep a small home kit on hand, and many families appreciate having these remedies as part of their wellness toolkit.
Some common homeopathic remedies you may encounter this cold and flu season include:
Oscillococcinum: A combination homeopathic product marketed for flu-like symptoms.
Aconitum napellus (Aconite): Traditionally associated with sudden-onset symptoms accompanied by restlessness, fear, or anxiety.
Belladonna: Traditionally associated with sudden fever and hot, red, flushed skin.
Pulsatilla: Traditionally associated with loose, rattling coughs with mucus and little thirst.
I teach parents how to understand homeopathy and make informed decisions about using it at home inside Healthy Families Collective, so you can feel more confident navigating your family's health when those middle-of-the-night symptoms appear.
And If Your Child Actually Gets Sick?
First, take a breath. Getting sick doesn't mean you've failed at prevention. That's childhood! A needed immune system upgrade!
Focus on comfort, hydration, rest, and watching how your child is doing. Fever is part of the body's response to infection, so look at the whole picture rather than the number alone.
For symptom relief, simple options like warm fluids, saline, humidified air, rest, and honey for children over one can help. Over-the-counter combination cold medicines aren't appropriate for every age, so check with your child's healthcare provider before using them.
You Don't Have to Figure This Out at 2 a.m. By Yourself
This is one of the main reasons I created Healthy Families Collective.
As a pediatric-focused naturopathic doctor and a mom, I know how overwhelming it can feel when your child is sick. You're tired, they're miserable, and suddenly you're searching the internet trying to figure out what to do next.
I want parents to have somewhere to turn before that moment arrives and instead of Dr. Google.
Inside Healthy Families Collective, you'll find specific natural medicine protocols for babies and kids, including guidance for coughs, colds, fevers, congestion, ear infections, digestive issues, and more. You'll also get access to our searchable wellness library, natural medicine education, workshops, Q&As with me, and a community of parents who get it.
The goal isn't to avoid conventional medicine or treat every illness naturally. It's to help you understand your options, feel prepared to support your family at home when appropriate, and recognize when it's time to seek additional care.
I want you to go from “What am I supposed to do?!” to “Okay. I have a plan.”
